My Ultimate Bucket List

June 25, 2018

I love a good adventure in an unlikely location, putting a spin on traditional explorations, or going to strange/unusual events around the world. So what's on my ultimate bucket list?

Surf in Japan

(I should probably learn how to surf first...)

Most people don't think of surfing when they think of Japan, which is exactly why I want to do it. There is nothing better than going to a country and doing something completely unexpected. You get awesome waves and all of the bonuses of being in Japan!

Sail Zanzibar

Zanzibar boasts some of the Indian Ocean's most beautiful islands. I can't think of a better way to explore them. Now I just need a few refreshers on how to sail...

Learn to ski, then

Ski Mauna Kea in Hawaii

Yes, you can ski in Hawaii! Mauna Kea (Hawaiian for 'white mountain') is a volcanic mountain whose summit sometimes gets a skiable amount of snow. There are no lifts, but a road goes to the summit to serve the dozen or so observatories located on the mountain. The only way up to the summit is by a 4-wheel drive vehicle, which serves as your "lift." The mountain also has no grooming and no resorts. It's a completely unique experience. Not to mention you can surf and ski in the same day! That's amazing!

Kayak through the Grand Canyon

I get that the Grand Canyon is immense, and that you should see it from above, but that's not how I roll. And not only do you get the stunning scenery of the Grand Canyon as you make your way down the Colorado River, there are also incredible hiking opportunities along the way. The true challenge? Trying to pack everything you need for camping and hiking in a tiny kayak.

Take a Hot Air Balloon Ride over Switzerland

My big dream is to go on a hot air balloon ride in Switzerland during the winter at sunset. Just think of those epic views of the snow capped Alps. Ugh. I would never want to come down.

Party at the Las Fallas festival in Valencia, Spain

If you enjoy fireworks and/or watching things burn, Las Fallas is the festival for you. The main focus of Las Fallas is the creation and destruction of ninots, which are huge statues made of papier-mâché, cardboard, wood, or plaster. I mean, come on, the community celebrates by lighting everything on fire! That's fantastic!

Take a seaplane in The Maldives

The Maldives is a tropical nation composed of 26 ring-shaped atolls, which are made up of more than 1,000 coral islands. It seems only fitting to get a bird's-eye view of it all. It would be even better if I could get a flying lesson in the Maldives... But I won't push my luck.

Go on an African horseback safari

If I can sit on a horse long enough, this is the ultimate journey for me. Going on any type of safari would fulfill a dream, but this would be the most amazing, beautiful, intimate experience ever. Although I don't know if I can emotionally handle running alongside elephants, giraffes, and zebras. My heart is palpitating from excitement just thinking about it.

Swim with penguins in Cape Town, South Africa

If you don't know, now you know. No further explanation necessary.

I'll continue to add to this list as I explore new countries and their possibilities. So save this post and revisit it when you're planning your next adventure and need inspiration.

If you have any weird, unique, and/or surprising adventures in your past, present, or future, tell me about them in the comments!
